My mom‘s sister is a PhD biologist at a Tier 1 research university. She’s traveled the world.

She was over to the house the other day and we were discussing religion. I asked her if she believed in God?

She said “No”.

I then asked her, “Do you have a soul?“

She didn’t answer right away and the conversation moved on. The next morning when we got up, she and I were the first ones in the kitchen, making coffee.

She goes, “You know, I thought about that question you asked me all night long. I couldn’t go to sleep.“

Now, I ask everyone I care about that question.

It's a great question! I like it because it doesn't come across as proscriptive, just curious. It gets the person thinking about deep questions within themselves, rather than putting them on the defensive about some dogmatic idea.

Oh my god, I was just reading this very thing in Homo Deus yesterday: "humans have exchanged meaning for power" or words to that effect. So synchronous that it landed in my inbox less than 24 hours later, must be proof of a deeper layer of meaning to it all, wouldn't you say?

I won't argue with that!

Funny how the religious people are so busy killing each other using means provided by the scientific people.
