My book, enfleshed
I’ll keep this short.
Today is my birthday. To celebrate, and because the timing lined up for it quite nicely, I decided to schedule the release of Shadow & Fire on paperback for today.
Now, I know what you’re thinking:
“Oh no! I totally forgot about author J.E. Petersen’s very special day! What can I do? What can I possibly do to make up for this terrible social injury?”
Happily for you, and out of the profligate generosity of my swollen heart, I have arranged a list of potential solutions.
Non-free solutions:
Become a paid subscriber and get the kindle version
Become a founding member and get two signed paperback copies
Free1 solutions:
Read one of the stories from the book (linked below) and leave a like or a comment or both
Take a picture of yourself eating something delicious and send it to three people with a message that explains I’m the one who bought or prepared that delicious thing for you, and what a good friend I am
The Stories of Shadow & Fire
Each of these have been somewhat updated and revised for the book, but not so much that I’m embarrassed to share the originals.
(Also there is one more story in the anthology that is not listed here, because it has never been published anywhere else. That story is called “Skinny Little Arms,” and it reportedly once caused a teenager to pass out in the middle of class. If that doesn’t convince you to go get your hands on the book, I’m all out of ideas.)
Part One - Shadow
Shadowloss - A 7-chapter novella about a man who loses his shadow, in a way that is absolutely dissimilar to Peter Pan
The New Ten Commandments - Explores the age-old question of what would happen if we cloned Moses
The Chastening of Erik Tiller - A boy, a dragon, and a happy2 ending
Pop! - The weirdest thing you’ll read all week
Funeral at Port Early - Pulpy action with a gruesome and satisfying conclusion
The Sheriff and the Scholar - The title is the summary
Part Two - Fire
Root Two - A comically depressing near-future cypherpunk thriller for people who love numbers
A Tasting of Fine Whine - Semi-autobiographical
The Fall - The tasty fruit of my collaboration with
Suicidal Intelligence - Perpetually apropos (and a
favorite)Digging Santo - Not a love story (therefore of no interest to
)Phone Boundaries - Flash fiction exercise that I absolutely crushed
Oil from a Stone - Ghosts, graves, and awkward teen romance (frankly surprised this one isn’t
favorite)
Closing Remarks
In all (tortured) seriousness, I must confess that today, I am simply grateful that everyone who is reading these words right now has, at one point or another, read something I wrote and liked it enough to come back for more.
Holy hell what a thing.
Thank you.
That is all.3
Unless you consider time a non-replenishable resource, in which case, these options are definitely not “free.”
Semantics!
Except for the part where I remind you one more time to go buy my book.
Happy Birthday! How did your pitch work? Authors and book marketers want to know!
SO HAPPY to have my own signed and will be posting all over social media!
